DAMASCUS - China urged the Syrian government and various political factions in the country to end all acts of violence against civilians, visiting Chinese vice-Foreign Minister Zhai Jun told a press conference here on Saturday after meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Zhai, as a special envoy of the Chinese government, said China has followed closely the developments of the situation in Syria, and is deeply concerned with the escalating crisis in the country.

China called on Syria to restore stability and normal social order, which is in line with the fundamental interests of the Syrian people, he said.

The Chinese vice-foreign minister arrived in the Syrian capital of Damascus Friday for a two-day visit.

Upon his arrival, Zhai told reporters at the airport that he will make contacts with Syrian leaders and various political factions during his stay in Damascus, and strive to play "a positive role" in and "make some contribution" to seeking a proper solution to the Syrian issue.
