BEIJING - China's flood control agency said late Sunday that, after torrential rains hit South China, water levels at the country's major rivers were staying below the warning lines.

Water levels of major rivers remained at least one meter below the dangerous lines after torrential rains hit the southeastern Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong provinces from early Saturday to Sunday Morning, said the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH).

As the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) forecast heavy rains to hit the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River from Monday to Wednesday, the SFDH ordered local authorities to prepare for floods.

The CMA on Sunday also issued a level-three emergency alert in response to the forthcoming strong rainstorms.

Under the level-three emergency alert, local meteorological authorities are ordered to be on 24-hour alert to monitor changes in the weather conditions, and give warnings in case of any possible natural disasters.
