HOHHOT - A flood-damaged dike was cemented completely in North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Saturday morning after 15 hours of strenuous effort by more than 1,000 people, local authorities said Saturday.

The dike was repaired to closure at around 7 am Saturday. A total of 7,450 people from two flooded villages along the Xinkai River had been evacuated.

The dike breach occurred Friday morning after days of heavy rainfall caused floods to submerge over 100,000 mu (about 6,667 hectares) of farmland in Kailu County in the city of Tongliao, according to the regional flood control and drought relief office.

The north part of Inner Mongolia has been battered by continuous heavy rain since earlier this month. Water levels of several branches of the West Liaohe River have even surpassed the peak levels of the disastrous flooding in 1998, said Yan Xinguang, deputy director of the regional flood control and drought relief office.

More rainstorms are expected to pound the city of Hulunbeir in the north of the region from Friday to next Tuesday, according to the regional meteorological department.
