HEFEI - Continuous downpours pounding East China's Anhui province have caused more than 660 reservoirs to overflow, an official with the provincial flood-control headquarters said Tuesday.

Hundreds of kilometers of dikes in the southern parts of Anhui had also been damaged, said Cai Zhenzhong, a spokesman for the headquarters.

The water levels of the Shuiyang and Qingyi rivers, both tributaries of the Yangtze River running through Anhui, had risen above the warning safety mark.

Operators of many reservoirs had started discharging water from them after the flood-control headquarters order them to do so.

As of Monday, 117.6 km of dikes had been confirmed damaged. A total of 1,824 sites of irrigation facilities, 36 sites of drinking water projects and three hydropower stations had been damaged by floods.

Heavy rain is forecast to batter most parts of Anhui from Wednesday to Friday, according to the provincial meteorological bureau.

Parts of China have experienced heavy rains over the past weeks. Rain-triggered floods in South China had left 175 dead and 86 missing, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Monday.
