BEIJING - China's top legislator Wu Bangguo on Tuesday pledged to further parliamentary exchanges between China and Barbados so to enhance mutual understanding and friendship.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, made the pledge during a meeting with visiting Barbados Prime Minister Freundel Stuart in Beijing.

Wu hailed the sound relationship between China and the Caribbean state, saying China appreciates Barbados' adherence to the one-China policy and its support on issues concerning China's core interests.

He highlighted bilateral cooperation in various fields such as infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, culture, education, and coordination on major international affairs, especially in coping with the financial crisis and climate change.

"Both China and Barbados, despite their different domestic situation, are developing countries," Wu said, adding the two sides bear the same task of developing the economy and improving people's living standards.

Wu said China has always held that all countries, big or small, poor or rich, strong or weak, are equal members of the international community, and should respect each other, treat each other equally, cooperate friendly and realize common development.

China is willing to make joint efforts with Barbados to push forward bilateral ties and benefit the two peoples, Wu said.

Stuart, who is on his first outbound visit since taking office last October, said his government values relations with China, and will further consolidate the existing cooperative ties and coordination with China on international issues.
