The index is expected to be cut down further to approach the average figure for cities in developed countries by 2020, experts at SWSA say.

By the end of 2009, Shanghai's urban sewage treatment rate has amounted to 78.9 percent with full operation of 52 sewage treatment plants scattered across the metropolis with a population of over 20 million.

Now, up to 82 percent of Shanghai's water used for industries could be recycled, and water experts say they hope to bring local residents' daily per capita water consumption to less than 155 liters by the end of this year.
