10 jailed for piracy in Hong Kong

Updated: 2009-07-27 23:52 HONG KONG: Ten people had been jailed for up to six years for contravening the Copyright Ordinance and the Organized and Serious Crimes Ordinance, Hong Kong's Customs and Excise Department said Monday. The sentences were enhanced 30 percent by the District Court on each charge pursuant to the Organized and Serious Crimes Ordinance, making it the hardest of its kind in Hong Kong. The nine men and a woman aged 24 to 53 were arrested on Feb 14, 2007, after they were found operating three pirated disc storage centers and retail outlets. Customs officers seized more than 33,000 pirated discs worth HK$820,000 ($105,900). The department applied under the Organized and Serious Crimes Ordinance to freeze HK$9 million worth of assets and will make an application to the court for the forfeiture of the assets. |
