Man cites 20,000 'errors' in popular dictionary

Updated: 2009-04-27 08:52 A Beijing man has accused the Commercial Press of making more than 20,000 errors in its Xinhua Dictionary and is suing them for 1 yuan. Chen claims that he had found 22,638 errors in the 10th edition of the Xinhua Dictionary, the most popular dictionary in China. He has asked the publisher to cease publication and compensate him 1 yuan for his work. An agent of the press claimed that the errors pointed out by Chen are based on a misunderstanding. The agent said it's a matter of opinion whether the entries are actually mistakes or accurate. The Dongcheng District People's Court held a hearing on Wednesday and will rule on it later. Xinhua Dictionary was first published in 1957. (Beijing Times) |
