BEIJING - More than 200 food inspectors made a surprise inspection of all major meat wholesale markets in Beijing before 6:00 am Saturday in a coordinated crackdown on contaminated meat products.

The municipal Bureau of Industry and Commerce said the campaign was launched after a steroid was found in pork in south China's Guangdong Province. The drug was meant to increase the amount of lean meat in pigs. Also, pork diseases such as blue-ear were found in Beijing's neighboring regions.

On-the-spot tests showed all the 131 meat samples of pork, beef and mutton were safe.

The inspectors also collected 55 samples of meat products for lab tests. The results will be announced at a later date.
