Nepali police arrest over 450 Tibetan separatists

KATHMANDU - Nepali police on Saturday detained over 450 Tibetan separatists who have resumed anti-China activities in the Nepali capital.

"At least 450 Tibetans were held while heading toward the Chinese embassy," said Superintendent of Police Sarbendra Khanal.

The demonstrators shouted anti-China slogans and appealed to police not to intervene in their demonstration.

As Nepal officially considers Tibet a part of China, police said they would not let anyone stage such demonstrations here.

Tibetans in Nepal, backed by those from India, where the Dalai Lama and his followers live in exile, have been launching almost daily anti-China protests since mid-March.

The protests were temporarily halted during Nepal's Constituent Assembly elections on April 10.

Even on May 12, when China's southwestern Sichuan province was hit by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake, and during the following days, some Tibetans continued their protests outside the Chinese embassy.
