Buried savings proved costly

An elderly couple almost lost more than 5,000 yuan ($699) they had saved by operating a small shop.

The couple had buried the money in the backyard of their home in a village in Zhengding county, Hebei province.

To their dismay, most of the money had rotted when they dug it up last week. Fortunately, a bank listened to their story and agreed to exchange 3,000 yuan of the damaged notes.

"I've never seen such an incident," Zhao, manager of the bank, said on Wednesday. "Normally, we do not accept money damaged to that extent. But in this case we made an exception to help the couple."
