TAIPEI-- An earthquake shook Taiwan on Thursday, causing buildings to sway in the capital, Taipei, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The epicentre of the 5.7 magnitude quake, which struck at 8:55 a.m. (0055 GMT) was about 14.7 km (9 miles) southwest of Taitung on the southeast coast, at a depth of 5.0 km (3 miles), the Central Weather Bureau said in a statement.
Earthquakes occur frequently in Taiwan, which lies on a seismically active stretch of the Pacific basin.

One of Taiwan's worst-recorded quakes, in September 1999, killed more than 2,400 people and destroyed or damaged 50,000 buildings.
