Taiwan victims' families arrive in Chinese mainland

JINAN -- Family members have arrived in east China's Shandong Province from across the Taiwan Straits after a fatal bus crash on Sunday killed one and injured seven tourists from Taiwan.

Altogether nine family members of the Taiwan victims have arrived in the provincial capital Jinan, including the cousin of the dead, 52-year-old Fu Hsueh Chi from Miao Li county in northwest Taiwan, the local government said.

Two more family members are expected to arrive in Jinan later on Tuesday.

The injured tourists are hospitalized at the Central Hospital of Jinan. Hospital sources said three of them were still in critical condition.

The victims were among 16 Taiwanese tourists aboard a bus from Jinan to Qufu, home of the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius. The bus collided with another bus at around 9:25 a.m. on Sunday on State Highway 104 in southern Jinan.

The toll was heavy on the other bus, too, with 20-year-old Zhang Qing killed and 25 passengers injured.

Police on Monday blamed the accident on Yan Ligang, 49, a driver from the neighbouring Xintai city, saying he had driven too close to the center of the road and therefore had a head-on crash with the bus carrying the Taiwan tourists.

Yan said he had steered the bus toward the center because it was raining and the road was slippery.
