China and Japan have agreed to set up a working group to discuss ways to prevent pollution by disused computers, air conditioners and other electronic junk from Japan, reported the China News Service Thursday.

It marked the first time for the two neighbors to set up a discussion group for the handling of waste, according to the Kyodo of Japan.

China's customs reported 49 waste smuggling cases last year, in which 8,000 tons of solid wastes were seized, including 7,480 tons of industrial waste, official statistics showed.

Most of the e-waste comes from Japan, South Korea as well as other developed countries or regions.

China has banned the import of electronic waste, but some companies smuggled the e-waste into the country for high profits.
