Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group announced at a press conference on Tuesday a partnership between its locally based Alipay Australia payment platform with Australian joint venture PayBang to expand the reach of Australian products in the Chinese market.

In addition to the tie-up, Alibaba, with the help of the Australian Postal Service, will set up 4,400 physical locations where customers can purchase prepaid cards to use on Alibaba's e-commerce sites such as Taobao.com and Tmall.com.

Peng Yijie, vice-president of Alibaba's affiliate financial planning company Ant Financial, told Sina News that Australia is a market that is full of cross-country and e-commerce opportunities.

"The needs of Chinese consumers are constantly changing, their desire for safe foreign imported goods have risen considerably," said Peng. "With Alipay and Taobao on the ground in Australia, we have the ability to bring more Australian goods directly to Chinese consumers."

Apart from Alipay, Alibaba group has also announced the establishment of its e-commerce website Taobao.com in Australia.
