Hong Kong stocks plunged 638.97 points, or 3.03 percent, to close at 20,435.24 on Wednesday.

The benchmark index opened at 20,725.90 and fluctuated between 20,417.76 and 20,725.90 during the session.

Turnover rose to HK$75.06 billion ($9.69 billion) from Tuesday's HK$65.67 billion.
