Shanghai stock index closes at record high

Chinese stock index rose for a third day, exceeding a record set less than a month ago.

The Shanghai Composite Index, which tracks the bigger of domestic two stock exchanges, added 0.83 percent to close at a new record of 3057.38. The Shenzhen Component Index, which covers the smaller one, gained 1.27 percent to close at 8,400.30 points.

That's more than 16 points above the high of 3040.6 points set February 26, the day before the sharpest plunge in China's equities in a decade sparked a sell-off in global equities.
