Tech innovation vital for China's industrial upgrades: legislator
Pursuing original innovation and achieving breakthroughs in core technologies are vital for both enterprise transformation and the advancement of China's industrial upgrades, a national legislator has said on the sidelines of the ongoing two sessions gathering in Beijing.
"Technological innovation is fundamentally about mastering core technologies," said Liu Jiang, chairman of Chinese consumer electronics company Sichuan Changhong Electric Co Ltd (CHiQ) and a deputy to the 14th National People's Congress, during an interview on Monday morning.
Pointing to the high-speed rail sector as an example, Liu said the lithium-ion battery system CHiQ had developed serves as the emergency power supply for the CR450, currently the world's fastest bullet train.
The NPC deputy said the company began working on the project in 2018 and, through continuous optimization in system design, structure and materials, reduced the weight of the battery system from the traditional 2,000 kilograms to 920 kg while maintaining performance requirements.
"Over the years, we have encountered many new problems and challenges. But through technological innovation and a spirit of perseverance, dedication and excellence, we have steadily moved forward," Liu added.
Founded as a State-owned enterprise during China's first Five-Year Plan (1953–57) period, Changhong produced the country's first black-and-white television and also built its first color TV production line. Today, the company manufactures a full range of smart home appliances and core components, while also expanding into emerging sectors such as the digital economy, new energy, healthcare and robotics.
As an NPC deputy, Liu said he has submitted several suggestions related to technological innovation and industrial transformation during this year's two sessions.
"We will stay committed to our mission of serving the nation through technological innovation and industrial development, and continue striving to reach the forefront of technological advancement," he said.
