Former senior Walmart figure given Maidelong role
Maidelong China, formerly known as Metro China, has appointed Andrew Miles, the former vice-CEO of Walmart China and president of Sam's Club China, as a strategic consultant.
The Wumart Group, Maidelong China's parent company, has declined to comment on the appointment.
The move marks Miles' return to the retail industry following his official retirement in January 2025. In his new advisory role, he will support Maidelong's continued expansion within the Chinese market.
Miles, who joined Walmart China in 2012, is widely credited with driving the rapid growth of Sam's Club China, expanding the chain from just eight stores to over 50. By 2024, Sam's Club had achieved sales of nearly 100 billion yuan (around $14 billion).
Under his leadership, the company's membership grew to 8.6 million, with annual membership fees surpassing 2.2 billion yuan. His expertise in membership-based retail and operational management has earned him significant recognition.
Maidelong's decision to bring Miles on board signals a strategic push to strengthen its position in China's competitive retail sector. The company, which has been operating in the region since 1996, has undergone significant transformations in recent years, including a full acquisition by Wumart Technology Group in 2023.
