The Minjiang River Estuary Wetlands and coastal wetlands in Taiwan are geographically adjacent and ecologically connected, serving as vital stopovers for migratory birds traveling along the route of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Between March and September each year, the bird can be spotted in the region.

In 2008, a Chinese crested tern with a plastic tube stuck in its beak, recorded simultaneously in Fuzhou and Matsu, an island administered by Taiwan, provided the first evidence that the species populated both areas. The discovery marked the beginning of a 17-year cross-Strait conservation partnership.
