The Xizang autonomous region's postal and express delivery sector has recorded historic growth as the region marks the 60th anniversary of its establishment this year, officials said on Wednesday.

According to the regional postal administration, the total volume of postal deliveries in 2024 has exceeded 203 million items — a big surge from 1965, when the value of postal and telecommunications services was just 2.78 million yuan.

The express delivery business has been the main driver of this expansion. Official data show that volumes rose from 2.84 million items in 2012 to more than 30.46 million items in 2024 — a 10.7-fold increase. Revenue grew 6.8 times over the same period.

Zou Hua, deputy director of the regional postal administration, said Xizang now has 756 universal service outlets and 4,646 village postal stations, effectively realising the goal of providing postal access to every village. Farmers and herders can now send and receive letters, parcels, and newspapers in their own communities, enjoying the same basic postal services as urban residents, he added.

Modernization has also transformed the industry. The region's first private express company was launched in 2004; today, 11 major courier brands operate 568 service outlets across Xizang, Zou said.

"Postal and express services in Xizang have long moved beyond the primitive model of 'human and horse transport, weather-dependent' operations," Zou said. "We have essentially built a modern, efficient delivery network that reaches deep into rural areas."
