Fuzhou, the capital of East China's Fujian province, will accelerate efforts to build itself into a modern, international and people-oriented city that can serve as an exemplary model in the country's modernization drive.

Zhou Zuyi, secretary of the Communist Party of China Fujian Provincial Committee, made the remarks while attending Friday's symposium marking the 30th anniversary of Fuzhou's establishment of its development goal to become a modern international city.

Zhou noted that, over the past three decades, Fuzhou has undergone tremendous changes, significantly enhanced its development capacity and greatly increased its reputation, distinctiveness and influence.

As a provincial capital, Fuzhou must play a demonstrative role by continuing to promote innovation-driven development, expand high-level opening-up, optimize public services, strengthen soft power, improve urban governance and firmly safeguard security, he said.

Zhou emphasized the need to fully implement the guidelines on urban high-quality development issued by the national leadership and the State Council. He called for people-centered development as well as exploring new models, paths and mechanisms to achieve breakthroughs in urban development.

He also called for measures to strengthen technological and cultural empowerment, improve modern governance and enhance the city's core competitiveness.
