Two laboratories dedicated to fundamental mathematics have been unveiled at a forum held on Saturday during the 2025 World AI Conference & High-level Meeting on Global AI Governance, marking a key step toward positioning Shanghai as an influential global hub for science and technology innovation, official sources said.

"Shanghai is accelerating its drive to become a globally influential science and technology innovation hub, and the in-depth integration between mathematics and artificial intelligence is a key lever to strengthen its source power for innovation," said Chen Jie, vice-mayor of Shanghai, during the forum on Mathematical Frontiers and Foundational Reconstructions of AI held on Saturday.

"Efforts will focus on driving AI advancement through fundamental innovation in mathematics, empowering industrial upgrading. A global call has been launched for integrated AI + Mathematics solutions to accelerate the development of a world-class innovation ecosystem," Chen added.

Both located in Shanghai's Putuo district, the two labs are known as Fefferman Lab, and Hitchin-Ngo Lab, respectively.

Hitchin–Ngo Lab will tackle cutting-edge challenges such as mirror symmetry and explore the deep connections between geometry and physics, while Fefferman Lab will focus on using AI to solve singularity problems in fluid dynamics, aiming to improve weather forecasting and turbulence simulation.

Going forward, a "dual-base" model will be adopted to connect computing and data resources between Europe and Shanghai.
