Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during the 6th UN Peacekeeping Ministerial in Berlin, Germany on Tuesday.

According to a statement released by the Defense Ministry on Wednesday, Dong commended the UN for its crucial role in upholding international fairness and justice over the 80 years since its establishment.

Given the complex and profound changes in the current international arena, the role of the UN must be strengthened rather than weakened, he stressed, noting that China firmly supports the core status of the UN and its central role in global security governance.

Dong emphasized that UN peacekeeping missions are born for peace and make significant contributions to maintaining world peace.

He added that China will advance new peacekeeping commitments, support UN peacekeeping reform and transformation, and always be a staunch supporter and constructive force in UN peacekeeping operations.

Expressing gratitude for China's longstanding support for the UN, Guterres highlighted that China is an important pillar of multilateralism today and in the future.

The UN highly appreciates China's three global initiatives and looks forward to carrying out close cooperation with China in various fields, firmly opposing unilateralism based on power, he said.

The three global initiatives proposed by China include the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative and Global Civilization Initiative.

China is playing an increasingly important role in UN peacekeeping efforts, and there is an expectation for closer cooperation with China in the field of peacekeeping, the UN chief said.
