China has launched its first aerial survey of marine glaciers in the Xizang autonomous region's Chamdo city, aiming to better understand the development patterns and melting changes of these glaciers, China Central Television reported on Tuesday.

Conducted by a team from the China Geological Survey, the mission has chosen Renlongba Glacier as the primary research site. The glacier is considered one of the rare modern mountain glaciers with marine characteristics located at mid to low latitudes globally. Survey points are situated at altitudes above 4,700 meters.

Due to the region's high altitude, low temperatures and vast glacial expanse, researchers are using an integrated system that combines both space- and ground-based monitoring techniques. The survey incorporates satellite remote sensing, helicopter-borne geophysical surveys and comprehensive ground investigations to collect data on glacier extent and thickness.

Officials said the findings will provide key scientific support for natural resource management and offer insight into the dynamics of glacier changes amid a warming climate.
