JAKARTA -- A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's eastern Maluku province on Tuesday, with no potential to trigger large waves, the country's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency said.

The agency had initially recorded the magnitude as 6.3 before downgrading it.

The tremors occurred at 5:15 pm Jakarta time (1015 GMT), with the epicenter located 93 km northeast of Maluku Barat Daya Regency at a depth of 157 km beneath the seabed.

The intensity of the tremors was measured at Modified Mercalli Intensity (III MMI) in Leti and Tiakur islands within the regency.

The quake was also felt in the nearby East Nusa Tenggara province, with an intensity of III MMI recorded in Kupang City and the regencies of Malaka and Belu.

No tsunami alert was issued, as the tremors were not strong enough to generate large waves.

Indonesia, an archipelagic nation, frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location within the seismically active "Pacific Ring of Fire".
