The Chinese military on Friday urged the Philippines to abandon its attempts of stirring up tensions in the South China Sea to pursue benefits, according to a Defense Ministry spokesman.

Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang said that the reason behind the Philippines' drawing some out-of-the-region countries to carry out so-called joint naval patrols was clear - it wants to use foreign forces' assistance to make troubles in the South China Sea.

"Such acts would only increase tensions in the South China Sea and jeopardize peace and stability in the region. We urge the Philippines to dispel its speculative mentality and stop irresponsible hyping," the spokesman said in a statement in response to a request for a comment on the recent joint patrol by militaries from the United States and the Philippines.

"We always stick to the principle that defense cooperation shall not compromise the interests of any third party nor damage the regional peace and safety," Zhang said. "The Chinese military will remain on high alert and continue to take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard our national sovereignty and maritime rights and interests."
