Shifting gears for car software innovation in China

China is the frontrunner in digitalization and automated driving, offering Mercedes-Benz immense potential as it aims to lead in car software.

Mercedes-Benz's R&D capabilities in China are essential to its global R&D network, including the R&D Tech Center China that went into operation last year in Beijing, and the new Shanghai R&D Center which opened earlier this year, focusing on connectivity and automated driving, software and hardware development.

With this comprehensive R&D presence in China, Mercedes-Benz has not only enhanced its global R&D capabilities but is also positioned to better cater for Chinese customers. The R&D centers also contribute to the industry's upgrading through talent training and development.

The company's latest local R&D effort is the Level 3 pilot project in China. Mercedes-Benz was the first automaker in the world to meet Germany's demanding legal requirements for a Level 3 driving system.

The company is now communicating with local authorities in the hope of bringing the technology to Chinese customers.

Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the VISION EQXX - the cutting-edge prototype is the most efficient vehicle the brand has ever built. This model was developed in-house in just 18 months.

The VISION EQXX is part of a technology program that can adapt innovative technologies for faster mass production.
