Mi said landscape painting is not about "mimicry" but needs "craftsmanship from one's heart ". The vitality of Chinese painting lies in its emotions, its spirituality and artistic concept. "Tranquil and innocent" was how Mi described the paintings of Dong Yuan, a painter from the Five Dynasties period in China. The landscape Dong depicted is unpretentious yet still profound.
