China will crack down hard on the trafficking of women and children this year, according to a government work report submitted for review to the top national legislature at the opening ceremony of the fifth session of the 13th National People's Congress on Saturday.

For the past three years, annual central government work reports have all highlighted the protection of the rights of women and children, and this year's pledged to continue this work.

Before the session kicked off, a number of NPC deputies called for intensifying the fight against human trafficking, suggesting that lawmakers harshly punish those who buy trafficked individuals.

Saturday's report also outlined government plans to improve the support and care system for senior citizens and people with disabilities.

It added that the government plans to develop social work and support the healthy development of social organizations, humanitarian assistance, volunteer services, public welfare, charitable initiatives and other related activities.
