Megan Rapinoe named Sports Illustrated's Sportsperson of the Year
WASHINGTON - United States women's national soccer team captain Megan Rapinoe has been named Sports Illustrated 2019 Sportsperson of the Year.
According to the magazine, Rapinoe is just the fourth woman to win the award individually across its 66-year history, with Chris Evert, Mary Decker and Serena Williams the others.
The 34-year-old led the US to glory at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France. Shrugging off injury concerns, Rapinoe won the FIFA Golden Boot and the Golden Ball for most goals and best player respectively, and scored the opening goal in the US's 2-0 win over the Netherlands in the final.
Rapinoe was named FIFA Player of the Year in September, and also captured the Women's Sports Foundation's Sportswoman of the Year award.
