A bomb disposal unit performed a controlled explosion of a suspicious package at Manchester Airport train station in the United Kingdom on Monday morning.

A man was detained at the scene by police and the station has been evacuated. All lines in and out of the station have been closed. Roads near the station were temporarily closed but traffic has now resumed normally.

The Greater Manchester Police, also known as GMP, has confirmed that officers are continuing with enquiries.

"Bomb disposal officers are at Manchester Airport transport interchange to assist GMP with enquiries," the GMP wrote in a statement on Twitter. "As part of their assessment to ensure the package is safe, a controlled explosion took place. The cordon will remain in place as a precautionary measure as enquiries continue."

UK National Rail has not said when normal service will resume at the station and suggests that passengers make alternative arrangements.
