Officials said the canteen is undergoing renovations in order to meet the dining demands of more residents, and plans to launch an online service in the future, in partnership with a State-owned catering agency.

Over the past four decades, the average life expectancy of Shanghai residents has risen 10 years to 83.63 last year, compared with the national average of 77 years. The number of elderly people aged 60 and over exceeded 5 million in the city, accounting for 34.4 percent of the total population, while those aged 80 years and above number 805,800.
