Metalenses

This flat metalens is the first single metalens that can focus the entire visible spectrum of light -- including white light -- in the same spot and in high resolution. [Photo/Shanghai Youth Science Society]

These lenses are so small that, up until now, it has been impossible to make them through traditional glass-cutting and glass-curving techniques. A breakthrough in the way lenses are produced will allow further miniaturization in sensors and medical imaging devices.
