BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed lower Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 2.13 percent at 2,645.85 points and the Shenzhen Component Index closing 2.83 percent lower at 7,879.52 points.

The combined turnover on the two bourses stood at 421.91 billion yuan ($ 60.9 billion), down from 440.2 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Most shares declined, with losers outnumbering gainers 1,296 to 122 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,852 to 219 on the Shenzhen bourse.

Cement and textile machinery were among the sectors that declined the most. Sichuan Shuangma Cement lost 9.98 percent to close at 17.94 yuan per share, while Geron dropped 7.03 percent to close at 17.20 yuan per share.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.80 percent to close at 1,355.33 points.
